FrEaKed OuT!

So today at MOPS a police officer came in to talk to us about Child Safety. She got to the part about pedophiles, and now I'm worried about my blog and the pictures I've posted. Is anyone else? Maybe I should make this by invite only???

Wow, seriously? I would have never thought it was that bad. How depressing! Did they say something about pictures on blogs?

Okay, your post title caught my attention...were there specific things about blogs we should know? Mine isn't public, but it's linked to friends' blogs...maybe you can post some info (without freaking us all out:)) I'd rather know a few helpful tips, especially in cyber world than to be caught off guard.

i've heard not to use only your name and that makes you much more than a needle in a haystack. so msdianedavis is different than diane davis and templetand tales is better than kristi templeton. i actually asked a few people about this when i started my blog, and i don't know if i'm as careful as i used to be, but i think i originally tried to refrain from using first and last names. i think it's just like anything in the world... you have to have a level of trust but not too much.

I, too, am interested in hearing more about what the officer said. I think being conscious of safety is definitely in order. I have tried to avoid first and last names together, names of the city where I live, etc. This is a good reminder...I have not been super careful lately. Also, I google my kids' names every once in a while to see if it connects to my blog. Being the needle in the haystack, as Di said, is the goal, because there are millions of family blogs out there. But I don't visit sites that require invitations as much, so that would be a last resort for me.

invite only is smart, i have a lot of friends that do invite only because of their kids. there are some real weirdos out there. click and drag is all they have to do to forever have a pic of your kids.

Way to go Diane, you just outed Risty-kay Empleton-ay! All kidding aside, our Scoutmaster is very careful not to post any children's names on our cubscout website, which seems like an obvious place for sickos to cruise; but I never thought about blogs.
